Careers

Stroke Rehabilitation Research Fellow

The trainee will take part in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Departmental activities through the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey—NJ Medical School, including Grand Rounds, Neuroradiology Rounds, and Traumatic Brain Injury/Stroke Journal Club. The PM&R Department and Kessler Foundation Research Center are diverse interdisciplinary environments where clinicians and researchers with specialization in sports medicine, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and orthopedics interact regularly with researchers across the spectrum from health outcomes to basic science work.

In-depth exposure to clinical care of stroke survivors with post-stroke spatial dysfunction (spatial neglect) is an integral part of the program, and trainees will learn how individual patient experience is translated into large-scale research activities.

The two-year training program requires the majority of the trainee’s work in clinical research activities. Supervised time in clinical activities might be arranged, depending on candidate goals and needs, but this must be individually negotiated. Year 1 places emphasis on knowledge building, data collection on existing projects, and development of independent research questions. By the end of year 2, the trainee is expected to have submitted one or more grant proposals to a federal (NIH) or other major funding source, and to be capable of directing an independent academic clinical research program.

Program goals: • Training in formulating novel and testable experimental hypotheses. • Training in translating hypotheses into feasible experimental methods. • Instruction in strategies for optimally combining clinical, didactic, and research activities in career development and professional activities. • Instruction in the interaction of theory, assessment, intervention, and treatment in cognitive neurology and neuropsychology as pertaining to stroke and other neurological conditions.

The Stroke Laboratory carries out state-of-the-art translational science in post-stroke cognitive disorders, with emphasis on spatial cognition. We provide advanced clinical research and academic training for the development of Cognitive Neurology, Allied health, Psychology and Neuropsychology professionals.
